Spatula Death formed in Hamilton in 1991 and released a cassette entitled "We Are Spatula". The band's members were Justin Harris (vocals, guitars, drum programming, noise), Scott Schneebeli (guitars, vocals, noise) and Scott Brodie (production, noises).
Post-1993 they often performed as a five piece, including Gary Clare and Matt Gould, although had enough "peripheral" members to potentially perform as an eight piece. For a number of years they organised annual music events, under the guise of the Spatula Death Battle of the Bands, which was started when Spatula Death didn't win the 1995 Contact 89Fm BOB and started their own competition which they would win.
