After leaving school in 1982, Pollock undertook an electrical apprenticeship, before leaving New Zealand in 1987 to undertake a music degree at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, USA, specialising in guitar. He returned to New Zealand in 1988, taught guitar privately, and played for a time with a band called Russia. In 1991 he released solo album called Just Looking, and released the song Yesterday on HUM Sampler 92. He joined Knightshade, and briefly Whisperscream, around 1991.
