The Bio-Luvals formed for an event called Acoustic Uprising at Downstairs Oranga in 1986, and played 60's inspired blues music (influences included Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and The Doors). They became electric following their first gig. The band included Andrew Ropiha (a.k.a. "Jimmy"; vocals), Chris Moses (guitar), Wa Kupa (bass), Andrew Bell (harmonica), Bruce Smith (drums) and Moses Hiakita, but typically played with between 7 and 8 members. All were students at The University of Waikato, Teachers College (which was a separate entity at that time), and the Waikato Polytechnic (now Wintec. Performances included the University of Waikato's orientation in 1988 and 1990. Chris Taane took over vocal duties from Rohipa in 1989. Chris Moses and Moses Hiakita went on to Whisperscream.
