In 1980 he formed his most successful band, The Bronx. He left this band in late 1982, but they remained playing after his departure. He left Hamilton in 1985 for New Plymouth, initially forming The Candles, followed by a string of other bands and solo recordings. Robert is the son of Houston Wells, former member of UK band The Marksmen, who had a song "Only the Heartaches" that reached #18 in the UK charts in 1963.
