Carl Watkins was a member of Wellington band Porch, before moving to Hamilton and forming The Crimson Scene, later renamed Daisy Chain Halo. Under the pseudonym of 'Ben Arnold', Watkins compiled numerous articles of snippets for Nexus (The Citric Column) and for a short time wrote for Rip it Up.
