Eqwanox was formed in Te Awamutu in 2004 by James Hanright, Nick Douch and Aaron Clark. In 2005, in only their fourth gig, the band supported Billy Corgan at the St James Theatre, Auckland. Kyle "Zakk" Wetton joined as a second guitarist in early 2007. In the same year the band won the Waikato/Bay of Plenty final in the World Battle of the Bands and competed at the national final where they finished second. In 2008 Eqwanox has been a finalist in the KFC 'Sounds From your Hometown' competition, and finished second equal in the Axces 'Rattle the Room' competition. They also gained the support slot for Seether at Vector Arena, Auckland. In 2009 the band won the Axces 'Rattle the Room' competition.
