Graeme Cairns' was a founding member of Big Muffin Serious Band in 1983, a band which he still active in performing with. He is also member of Goulash Archipelago. However, he is best known for his role as "Laird McGillicuddy", the leader of the satirical political party the McGillicuddy Serious Party. Cairns unsuccessfully stood for Mayor of Hamilton in 1983, and formed the McGillicuddy Serious Party soon after.

In December 2014, he received a Civic Award from Hamilton City Council, for services to the Arts and Culture.
