Catharsis (BOMB01) - Book of Martyrs - 1989, BOMB Records
Effectively a 'mini-album', Catharsis was the debut cassette release from Book of Martyrs; originally recorded and released in 1989 while the band was still based in Rotorua. No mere demo tape, the cassette was professionally mastered, printed and packaged on the band's own label BOMB Records (BOMB01) at a time when the cassette format for studio albums was as viable a commodity on the international market as vinyl or CD.

Catharsis showcased the original BoM lineup of Jonny Armstrong (drums, vocals), Alan Deare (bass, guitars) and Sarah Knight (cello, bass), and also featured Will (feedback, poetry). William was also responsible for the cover concept and photograph on Catharsis. By 1990, following the band's relocation to Hamilton, Catharsis had become a staple feature of Hamilton music collections, with songs like Temple, Yorrick's Song and Scary Manuka Tree receiving regular airplay on Contact 89FM.
