Shearer's Music Works was established in August 1963 as Andy Shearer's Music Store by Andy and Rowena Shearer. Andy had previously worked for Begg's. The store first opened in Toorak Chambers at 548 Victoria St, but moved to 313 Victoria St in the early 1970s. The store later moved to larger premises in Garden Place, and in 1988 to an even larger shop at 380 Anglesea Street, where it is still found. The distinctive building is painted with the music score from Sonatina op. 36, no. 4. by Muzio Clementi.

The store stocks amplifiers, basses, drums, educational music DVD's and videos, guitars, harmonicas, keyboards and pianos, percussion instruments, print music, sound systems and lighting, stringed instruments, ukuleles, woodwind and brass instruments. It has in the past sold records. Former staff of the store include Chris Thompson.
