In 1980 he formed his most successful band, [[The Bronx]]. He left this band in late 1982, which remained playing after his departure. He left Hamilton in 1985 for New Plymouth, initially forming ''The Candles'', followed by a string of other bands and solo recordings. Robert is the son of ''Houston Wells'', former leader of UK band ''Houston Wells and the Marksmen'', who had a song "Only the Heartaches" that reached #18 in the UK charts in 1963 (seven weeks in the UK charts; also, #7 and 10 weeks in the Irish charts).
