A precursor of [[The Shrugs]] and active in 1999, ''Phaser'' featured (at varying times) [[Geoff Doube]] on guitar and vocals, [[Nick Thomas]] on bass and vocals, and [[Kevin Glover]] on guitar (one of the three would play drums).  This incarnation of the band never played live, but did record some material on 4 track.  [[Neil Ramsay]] joined the group on bass in 1999 and jammed more regularly with Geoff.  Kevin left when he moved to Auckland and the band added a permanent drummer, [[Ritchie Ranum]], changing their name to [[The Shrugs]] in early 2000.
