A precursor of The Shrugs and active in 1999, Phaser featured (at varying times) Geoff Doube on guitar and vocals, Nick Thomas on bass and vocals, and Kevin Glover on guitar (one of the three would play drums).  This incarnation of the band never played live, but did record some material on 4 track.  Neil Ramsey joined the group on bass in 1999 and jammed more regularly with Geoff.  Kevin left when he moved to Auckland and the band added a permanent drummer, Ritchie Ranum, changing their name to The Shrugs in early 2000.
