In 2014, Strange stood as a Labour candidate for the Taupō electorate, and in 2016 he was chosen as candidate for Hamilton East to contest the 2017 General Election. Placed at number 36 on Labour's party list, he did not win the electorate, but entered parliament via the Party list.
