Formed in 1996, Gas were a band formed from local veterans Dave Whitehead (guitars), Dave Lowndes (guitars), Alan Deare (bass), Paul Tregilgas (drums) and were fronted by relative newcomer Nicola Walsh (vocals). The band won their heat in the Battle of the Bands 1996, although live appearances were rare on the whole.

They recorded with Whitehead and Lowndes' Theta Productions and the track D-Generation received a lot of airplay on Contact. Another track Give featured on the compilation In Love With This Town. Other unreleased tracks are still in circulation. Their style of melodic punk-influenced pop/rock was compared to Suburban Reptiles, X-Ray Specs, Garbage, Siouxsie and The Banshees and early Blondie.
