The Music Box Record Exchange
The Music Box first opened in the Wesley Chambers building on Victoria St, in a premises that was soon taken over by Metropolis Caffe. It then moved to "The Marketplace", an area at the south end of Victoria St where "the Outback"/The Factory now stands. It later moved to 113 Alexandra Street, near the corner of Collingwood St.
The Music Box sold second-hand vinyl, tapes and CDs. Original ownerMike Caves onsold the business to Carl Jansen, who then sold to John Nichols. The store had a reputation under Nichols as being a bit miserly; nearly every record in the store was inevitably labelled as a "rarity" and as being in "excellent condition". The Music Box was the last of Hamilton's old school record exchanges to close (see Victoria Street Record Exchange and Hamilton Record Exchange), but it was also much younger. It was relocated to Hastings in the early 2000s by then owner John Nichols.
